In this scenario, the scenario that occurs most frequently, a sexual assault kit (SAK) was tested but no foreign DNA was obtained or only the victim’s own DNA was identified or results were inconclusive.
When this occurs, the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory (WSCL) will notify the submitting agency of the results.
The local law enforcement agency and/or local multi-disciplinary team may conduct a case review and identify further investigation is needed. For example, further investigation or review of the case may find other evidence is available for testing.
The teams may also consider notifying the victim of the testing results. To learn more about survivor notification, click here.
