Inventory

The first step in the WiSAKI project was to complete a detailed, statewide inventory of previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs) in the possession of law enforcement agencies and hospitals statewide. This was an essential starting point for the project to ensure there was a full accounting of the SAKs to track throughout the process, from testing through prosecution. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), one of the grantors, requried the inventory to be complete before testing of the SAKs could begin. WiSAKI’s unique, victim-centered approach involved an individual assessment of each of the 6,000+ SAKs held by law enforcement agencies and hospitals in Wisconsin. Due to the complexity of this inventory process and a commitment to accuracy, Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) personnel and local law enforcement agencies divided the state into regions and worked with agencies to document each individual SAK. Law enforcement agencies statewide willingly collaborated with DOJ in this effort. For more information on this process see the Inventory Collection Methodology.

Data Notes: All active law enforcement agencies in the state completed an inventory. Counties (and agencies within) that did not possess any previously unsubmitted SAKs are not displayed.

The information contained in the dashboard was provided directly by local law enforcement agencies.

*Until all of the SAKs have been received and verified by the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory (WSCL), these numbers are still subject to change (lasted updated 4/7/2021).
